Convergence refers to the process by which previously distinct media technologies, platforms, industries, and cultural practices merge into increasingly integrated systems. The concept was most influentially theorised by Henry Jenkins, who distinguished between technological convergence (the merging of hardware and software platforms), economic convergence (the consolidation of media ownership across industries), and cultural convergence (the way audiences increasingly participate in media across multiple platforms simultaneously). In practice these forms of convergence are deeply interconnected, and the video game industry offers some of the clearest examples of all three operating together. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH), developed by Nintendo EPD and published in March 2020, is a particularly rich case study: a game that exists simultaneously as a software product, a social media phenomenon, a political platform, a commercial ecosystem, and a site of ongoing audience creativity. Understanding convergence in this context means understanding not just how technologies merge, but how those mergers reshape the relationships between producers, texts, and audiences in ways that are still unfolding.
Technological Convergence
Technological convergence refers to the merging of previously separate hardware and software functions into single devices or platforms. The Nintendo Switch itself is one of the most striking examples of technological convergence in contemporary gaming: it functions simultaneously as a home console (connected to a television), a handheld device (played on the move), and a local multiplayer platform (with detachable Joy-Con controllers shared between players). A single piece of hardware thus converges three previously distinct gaming contexts — home, portable, and social — into one device. This convergence was commercially decisive for ACNH: the game's gentle, session-based gameplay was perfectly suited to the Switch's flexible form, allowing players to engage in short bursts on a commute or extended sessions at home on the same device and the same island.
Technological convergence also shapes how ACNH is distributed and updated. The Nintendo eShop converges the functions of a physical retail store, a download platform, and a content update service into a single digital interface. Players purchase, download, and receive ongoing updates to ACNH through the same platform, eliminating the need for physical media and enabling Nintendo to deliver new seasonal content — events, items, characters — directly to players worldwide without requiring them to purchase additional products. This convergence of retail and content delivery has significant implications for the producer-audience relationship, giving Nintendo an ongoing connection to its player base that the era of physical-only distribution never permitted.
The Nintendo Switch Online service represents a further layer of technological convergence, merging online multiplayer functionality, cloud save storage, access to a library of classic games, and subscription-based content into a single service. For ACNH players, this subscription unlocked online island visiting, enabling the social dimensions of the game to function across geographical distances. The convergence of gaming with cloud infrastructure — storing player island data remotely — also introduced new questions about data ownership and security that regulatory frameworks have had to address.
Cross-Media Convergence
Cross-media convergence refers to the way media products extend across multiple platforms and formats, creating what Jenkins calls a "transmedia" experience in which different platforms contribute different dimensions of a larger cultural world. ACNH participates extensively in cross-media convergence, existing not only as a game but as a content ecosystem that spreads across YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and beyond.
Player-created content is central to this. Millions of players have uploaded ACNH content to YouTube — let's play videos, island tours, design tutorials, seasonal event guides — creating a vast secondary media layer around the game that functions as both entertainment and free marketing for Nintendo. On TikTok, short-form ACNH content reached audiences who had never played the game, generating interest and driving sales. This cross-media spread is not incidental to ACNH's success; it is structural. Nintendo's vertically integrated ownership model is a powerful example: by controlling the Switch hardware, the eShop distribution platform, and its first-party software including ACNH simultaneously, Nintendo converges the functions of hardware manufacturer, software developer, and digital retailer into a single corporate structure. This gives Nintendo a degree of commercial control that third-party developers, who must distribute through platforms they do not own, cannot replicate.
The Happy Home Paradise DLC for ACNH illustrates economic convergence at the product level. More broadly, the video game industry has converged economically with the entertainment industry, the technology sector, and the social media economy. The enormous volume of ACNH content on YouTube and TikTok generates advertising revenue for those platforms partly on the basis of Nintendo's intellectual property, creating a commercial relationship between gaming and social media that did not exist in earlier decades. Nintendo benefits from the exposure; the platforms benefit from the content; the audience benefits from the entertainment. This triangular economic convergence is now a structural feature of the contemporary media landscape.
Cultural Convergence and Participatory Culture
Cultural convergence, in Jenkins's framework, describes the way audiences increasingly move across media platforms, carrying stories, characters, and cultural references with them and contributing their own creative responses. Jenkins argues that convergence has produced a participatory culture in which the boundary between producer and audience has become porous — audiences are no longer simply consumers of media texts but active contributors to their cultural meaning and commercial life.
ACNH is a near-perfect illustration of participatory culture in action. The game's design explicitly invites creative participation: players terraform their islands, design custom clothing and artwork, construct elaborate architectural and landscape compositions, and host in-game events for visiting players. This creativity does not remain within the game. It circulates across social media platforms, generating communities of practice — groups organised around specific aspects of ACNH culture such as competitive island design, in-game trading economies, or seasonal event documentation — that exist entirely independently of Nintendo.
The political use of ACNH during the Hong Kong democracy protests of 2020 represents the most dramatic example of cultural convergence and participatory culture in the game's history. Players used the game's creative tools to construct virtual protest spaces, display political slogans, and circulate images of in-game activism across global social media platforms. The game converged with political discourse in ways that were entirely unplanned by Nintendo and that had real-world consequences, including the game's removal from grey-market platforms in China. This illustrates both the radical openness of convergent participatory culture and its limits: audiences can repurpose media platforms in extraordinary ways, but powerful institutions — whether corporate or governmental — retain the ability to restrict access.
Convergence and Regulation
The convergence of gaming with social media, cloud services, subscription platforms, and online multiplayer creates significant regulatory challenges, as existing frameworks were designed for a media landscape that no longer exists. The Online Safety Act places duties on platforms that facilitate online interaction, which affects the conditions under which Nintendo can offer multiplayer functionality in ACNH. The convergence of gaming with cloud storage raises questions under the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR about where player data is held, who has access to it, and how long it is retained.
The convergence of gaming with children's media is a particular regulatory concern. ACNH's PEGI 3 rating means it is explicitly designed for the youngest audiences, and its cross-media presence on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok — where ACNH content reaches child audiences — brings it into contact with regulations governing advertising, data collection, and content moderation on those platforms. Nintendo's conservative approach to monetisation and its walled-garden approach to online interaction can be understood partly as a regulatory strategy, anticipating and pre-empting scrutiny that more aggressive convergence of gaming with commercial and social media platforms might attract.
Convergence and the Future of the Industry
Convergence in the video game industry shows no sign of slowing. The emergence of live service games — titles that function as ongoing platforms rather than discrete products, continuously updated and monetised — represents a further convergence of gaming with subscription media, social networking, and entertainment broadcasting. While ACNH participates in this model in relatively modest ways through its seasonal updates and Nintendo Switch Online integration, competitors such as Fortnite have pushed the live service model much further, hosting in-game concerts, film screenings, and branded events that converge gaming with music, cinema, and advertising simultaneously.
For students of media, convergence raises fundamental questions about the boundaries of the medium itself. If a game can be a protest space, a fashion platform, a social network, a museum, and a concert venue simultaneously, the category of "video game" may be less stable than it appears. What ACNH demonstrates is that convergence is not simply a technical process of platforms merging — it is a cultural process in which the meanings, uses, and possibilities of media are continuously renegotiated between producers, audiences, and the wider social world.
