THIS POST CONTAINS LINKS TO DIFFERENT SOURCES FOR INFORMATION ABOUT NARRATIVE AND NARRATIVE THEORY. YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS HAVE REVIEWED AND INTRODUCED THERE LINKS.
This is a link to a page that explains Propps character types and narrative functions in a detailed yet easy to understand form, it also gives background information and Propps inspirations.
This link is to a power point explaining what a narrative is, how narratives are structured, how it is informed, questions to consider when watching/reading a narrative and the 4 main narrative theorists. I think this power point is useful because it’s clear/understandable and gives you good information without going into too much unneeded detail.
http://www.slideshare.net/nicollem/narrative-theory-2104323?next_slideshow=2This link is useful in explaining the different theories and theorists to do with narritive in media studies. It breaks down the theories by explaining the research completed and shows their findings. It covers all the important theorists including: Vladimir Propp's character roles, Todorovs equilibrium, Barthes' codes and Levi-Strauss' Binaray Oppositions. Its all in a slideshow so its all in one place and kept simple for all to understand.
http://www.slideshare.net/guest9e3b3b/narrative-theory-2104298This is a link that will take you to a slide share, giving you a brief understanding of four different theorists and their narrative theories. This is useful because it gives you a good basis on what to research if you wish to take it farther.
http://brianair.wordpress.com/film-theory/narrative-theories/This is a link to a website which I found very useful, outlining all the main features of Narrative Theory and explains all 6 of them by Barthes, Levi-Strauss, Propp, Todorov, Syd Field and Stanley Kubrick (BEWARE - KUBRICK IS NOT A THEORIST)
This link leads to a better explanation of the Actantial model theorized by semiotician Greimas. The actantial model is the idea that in a story there are 6 main actants "hero, villain (opponent of hero), object (of quest), helper (of hero) and sender (who initiates the quest)." And all of these roles are important for the progression of the story and without them the story could end up being incomplete. Unfortunately there are a lot of cases of this not being true.
This presentation shows Todorov’s basic theory on equilibrium. It shows the 5 main stages and the basic idea of what happens in each of them.
This link describes each type of narrative there is in the media and what type of media it can be found in.
This link gives a description for linear and non-linear narratives, multi-strand and dual narratives. It also gives a brief description of Barthes’ action code and the Enigma codes. The link also goes on to talk about theorists; Todorov, Propp, Strauss (Binary Oppositions).
This page is very useful as it lists the different key themes and the terminology that’s required in Media Studies. Some of the terminology includes Negotiated Reading, Non-verbal communication, Narrative code and many more. I found the website very clear to the point and easy to understand and would recommend it.
