CONTEXT
On 16 April 2025, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the terms “sex”, “man” and “woman” in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological sex, in a case concerning whether a trans woman with a Gender Recognition Certificate could be legally regarded as a woman under the Act. The Court stressed that this interpretation does not remove legal protections for trans people, who remain protected against discrimination under the Equality Act.
