Over the next two weeks, you will be working in groups of 2 or 3 to produce a presentation about The Jungle Book.
You will be assigned one of the questions below and you will research the topic, prepare a resource for the class, write the essay and present them all to the class.
In all cases, you will need to refer closely to both the original Jungle Book film from 1967 and the Disney live action remake from 2016 in your answer.
QUESTIONS:
If possible, reference the theorists from Media Ownership (Industries) and/or Audiences. As a reminder this would be:
Curran and Seaton, Livingstone and Lunt,
Hesmondhalgh (industries)
Bandura, Gerbner, Hall, Jenkins, Shirky (audiences)
1. Discuss differences in production, distribution and promotion between Jungle Book 1967 and Jungle Book 2016. What do these differences tell us about the way media audiences have changed?
2. How has the marketing and promotion of films changed over the years? Refer to the two versions of the Jungle Book that you have studied.
3. How do film companies use social media and online platforms to promote, distribute and show (exhibit) their films?
4. Show how the film industry ensures that mainstream films reach the widest possible audiences.
5. Explain why JB16 was even more successful than the original 1967 version.
AS YOU PREPARE, REMEMBER:
Your presentations / essays need to contain thoughtful and thorough analysis of the question.
You need to use specific and detailed information (keep a record of all research).
If you learn a new piece of terminology, you will need a slide to explain the meaning.
NB: YOU HAVE TWO WEEKS TO PREPARE.
YOU WILL BE PRESENTING IN THE LAST WEEKS OF TERM.

ReplyDeleteThis was an excellent presentation which was rich in research and clear examples. You make some really interesting points with regards to the challenge on comparing two films which came out against different backdrops (ie the lack of competition in 1967 verses the increased exposure and marketing power of 2016 through social media etc.) but this in turn makes the success of the 2016 version even more extraordinary given the fierce competition to reach family audiences. The change in strategy with male audiences and the emphasis on 'masculine' film associations such as Pirates of the Carribean and Iron Man and the targeted Super Bowl and Star Wars trailer spots were clearly a major factor in finding new audiences. It would have been great to have some links to the theorists (though not essential as you make a solid argument). Very engaging, very informative, very useful revision tool!!

ReplyDeleteThis is a good presentation which provides some insight into how a wider audience was reached. The statistics about the market share of Disney (27%) is frightening as is their global reach and marketing power. You also give a nod to Hesmondhalgh, Curran and Seaton re media power which is useful (a direct quote would have been amazing). Breaking the question up into four areas (production, marketing, distribution and accessibility initiatives) was a good strategy - certainly the latter (which included closed captions, audio descriptions and subtitles) demonstrates how the industry has become aware of a more diverse audience demographic and was a great point to make. An area that perhaps could have been explored, and which none of us have considered, is the physical restrictions and logistics of distributing analogue physical film and digital. Digital is instantaneous and has very little cost to replicate/distribute whereas the production of physical copies of a film (Prints) for traditional projection was huge - on average £1,000 to print and deliver to a cinema. Without this overhead on modern movies this allows for an increase in marketing spend. Good stuff which has raised several new aspects for us to consider.
