MUSIC VIDEOS: REPRESENTATION

Over the next two weeks, you will be working in groups of 2 or 3 to produce a presentation about the Music Videos we have studied (Titanium and Stop Where You Are). You will be assigned* one of the questions below and you will research the topic, prepare a resource for the class, write the essay and present them all to the class.

In all cases, you will need to refer closely to the music video in your answer.

QUESTIONS: If possible, reference the theorists from Media Representation.

  1. Explain how representations in music videos are chosen to promote the artist(s). Refer to one of the music videos you have studied to support your answer.
  2. Explain how representations of musical artists and their work communicate information about their cultural and political contexts.
  3. Explain how and why stereotypes are used in music videos. Refer to one of the music videos you have studied to support your answer.
  4. Explain how media language in music video incorporates viewpoints and ideologies. Refer to one of the music videos you have studied to support your answer.

AS YOU PREPARE, REMEMBER: Your presentations / essays need to contain thoughtful and thorough analysis of the question. You need to use specific and detailed information (keep a record of all research).

If you learn a new piece of terminology, you will need a slide to explain the meaning.

NB: YOU HAVE TWO WEEKS TO PREPARE.
YOU WILL BE PRESENTING IN THE LAST WEEKS OF TERM.

Corrine Bailey-Rae - Stop Where You Are

David Guetta - Titanium

    1. This was a good presentation with some very clear references and examples provided - particularly the use of stills which showed the contrasts between common perceptions of stereotype and the reality behind it. You may a clear statement about how CBR is portrayed as 'power in the dark for change' and also extend the stereotyping to the environment. It was good to see links to theorists such as Hall and Gauntlett.

    1. This was an entertaining presentation which perhaps relied on style over substance. You make a really good comment early on about the subverting of stereotypes and link this partially to a young audience and feelings of oppression/misunderstanding by adults but do not make a clear link as to how this may be interpreted by an older audience nor what it suggests about the artist themselves. One of the key characters, indeed the protagonist themselves, is not addressed. We have the archetype of the 'orphan' and the stereotype of the neglected child and this was not touched upon. There is no reference to theorists to support your argument and the argument itself is not always clear (other than the fact stereotypes are subverted). The HOW part of the question is answered - the WHY less so. In this instance, short form narrative story telling, stereotypes are an important device to quickly establish characters and relationships in a visual medium. Some stills from the music video would have been useful as a visual reference.

    1. This was a largely convincing presentation which gave some insight into the background of the artist and how this may have impacted her choice of song/video. The argument was supported with references to Hall's Representation theory and valid points were made with regards to the political undertone of the video - sense of being trapped, people being quick to judge/stereotype. You mention that CBR is an angelic figure who is setting out to deconstruct stereotypes and fix a new meaning. Largely convincing argument but needed, perhaps, a few more direct examples from the video itself.

    1. This was a heavily detailed presentation which was packed with links to theory, calling upon the work of Hall, Bathes and Zan Nomen. There were interesting points made about value transition between the messaging in the video and the artist themselves. There was, at times, a tendency to repeat information and go round in circles and sometimes less is more. I enjoyed the analysis of the song itself and the message behind the lyrics which then informed the video itself. The presentation could have benefitted from more direct analysis of the video and key moments - this was largely limited to the end of the presentation however some thought had gone into this overall, so well done.

    1. There were some nice points made in your presentation but clearly a lack of communication between you both as you presented two different music videos. It would have been nice to have some links to theorists however these were notably absent. What was nice was the consideration that Titanium made the point that systems currently in place do not serve the right purpose (teachers/police/community failing to support vulnerable child) and that neglect leads to repercussions. So some good points but a somewhat disjointed argument.
