RESEARCH AND PRESENTATION - CODES AND CONVENTIONS

This research task is designed to give you some insight into:

1: The codes and conventions of UK newspapers.

2: The history of UK newspapers.

3: The forces that act on genres to change them.

4: The impact of the Internet.

The best way of thinking about this task is to think that you are teaching the other part of the group about your chosen genre.

The task:

In your groups, prepare a presentation (which can be broken into several smaller presentations) in which you answer one of the following questions...

a) How have the codes and conventions of tabloid newspapers changed over time?

b) How have the codes and conventions of broadsheet newspapers changed over time?

Your presentations must include:

i) Reference to at least four different newspapers + a clear focus on either The Daily Mail and/or The Guardian (Both for broadsheets - Daily Mail for tabloids).

ii) A comparison between the original codes and conventions of newspapers and the current codes and conventions.

iii) A timeline of the most significant changes, with reference to the social, cultural, political, economic and technological context.

iv) Discussion of the impact of technology in the 21st century.

NB: Conventions can include anything from layout and design, to story content, to methods of distribution, to journalistic standards.

PRESENTATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE LAST WEEK OF TERM...
