THEORISTS - ALL - POWERPOINT + LINKS

The slideshow contains the description of each theorist that can be found on the OCR website and a short (in a nutshell) version of each theory.

If you find a good website that helps you to understand/revise any of the theories/theorists, please post it into the comments section below. A brief comment will help people to decide which might help them.

    1. This is a link to Mrs. Fisher's playlist on youtube. In general, I think that these are really useful for revision or to fill in any gaps. She uses sound examples to help her explain and she is generally very clear.

There are times when I think she doesn't grapple with the tougher aspects of a theory, but there is nothing that I disagree with.

    1. Tzvetan Todorov wanted to analyse the structural properties of narratives and develop a general theory that could be applied to all stories. He called this new approach narratology, or science of the narrative.

He described how stories should begin with a stable situation, but this routine is disturbed by some force which results in a state of imbalance. Characters then have to search for a new equilibrium

    2. Todorov believed that all films follow the same narrative pattern and that throughout the story the equilibrium (peace, balance) that was at the beginning of the film is disturbed, resulting in a disequilibrium. The characters then acknowledge the disequilibrium and try to solve it, which results in a final state of new equilibrium what is commonly known as a "happily ever after."

    3. Todorov believed all narratives can be seen as a move from one state of equilibrium (where nothing need occur) to another, new equilibrium. The disruption to the equilibrium is what drives the narrative towards a new equilibrium. The movement from the initial equilibrium to the new equilibrium entails a transformation (e.g. the hero expresses their heroism and defeats the villain)

    4. Todorov theorised that all narratives follow the same narrative structure in which they start at equilibrium, undergo a disruption to the equilibrium, which then puts them in a new equilibrium. During this process the hero experiences the transformation which presents what the narrative values.

    5. Todorov suggested that all narratives contain equilibrium, disequilibrium, recognition, resolution, and new equilibrium. "Logical and artistic necessity" mandates these formal similarities. Narrative, Todorov theorised that it is a language that humans are conditioned to speak.

    1. The Media Insider is always good. He explains clearly and has solid sources to illustrate ideas. I thoroughly recommend his commentary.

    2. Mrs. Fisher

I've already linked to Mrs. Fisher's full list of theorists. Always sound, but not always perfectly thorough. A good source for revision.

    3. If you prefer to read rather than listen, this is a good source. There is a link to one of the videos posted below and some interesting discussion with Russell Brand. There are also some quotations from Gilroy that might be useful to look at and even learn some of.
